Billing month
Definition. The billing month is the label a DISCO gives to a bill cycle, and it names the month in which the bill was raised — not the month in which most of the electricity was actually used.

Where you see it: Printed as a month-and-year pair near the reference number, and repeated in the twelve-month consumption history at the foot of the bill.
The one-month offset
A meter read on 5 July closes a period that started on about 5 June. The bill generated from that reading is stamped July, delivered mid-July and due at the end of July. Roughly 85 per cent of the units on it were consumed in June.
This is why a bill labelled with the hottest month often looks mild, and the following one is brutal — the heat wave lands on the next cycle.
Why the offset matters for money
Tariff notifications, fuel adjustments and surcharge changes are applied by billing month, not by the date the units were burnt. A rate that takes effect in July is charged against June's consumption if June's units are billed in July.
When you challenge an amount, quote the billing month exactly as printed. A complaint that says 'my June bill' when the document says July will be matched against the wrong record.
Reading the twelve-month history
Every PITC bill carries a strip of the last twelve billing months with units and amounts. This is the most useful part of the page and the part most people never read.
Compare the same billing month a year apart rather than consecutive months. Year-on-year removes the seasonal swing and shows whether your household load has genuinely changed or whether the tariff did.
Frequently asked questions
My bill skipped a month. Is that possible?
Yes, and it usually means the meter was not read that cycle. The missed period is either estimated and shown as an average bill, or rolled into the next reading, which then covers roughly sixty days and looks alarmingly high.
Can I ask for a different billing date?
No. Reading dates are set by the meter reader's route schedule for your feeder, and individual accounts are not moved off it.
