Cutting air conditioning cost without losing comfort
Short answer. Set 26 °C and run a ceiling fan alongside it. Each degree lower costs roughly 6 to 8 per cent more energy, and moving air makes a room feel about 3 °C cooler than it is — so 65 watts of fan buys back several hundred watts of compressor time.

The thermostat is the whole bill
A fixed-speed compressor is either on or off, and the thermostat decides what fraction of each hour it spends on. That fraction is what you pay for.
At 26 °C against a 40 °C afternoon, a well-matched 1.5 ton unit runs perhaps two-thirds of the time. At 20 °C it barely stops. The difference between those two settings is roughly 150 units a month on a bedroom unit used overnight.
The fan trick, in physical terms
Air movement accelerates evaporation from skin, which is what the body registers as cooling. A ceiling fan does not lower air temperature at all but makes a 26 °C room feel like a 23 °C one.
So the fan is not an alternative to the air conditioner — it is what lets you raise the thermostat by three degrees for identical comfort. Running both is cheaper than running the air conditioner colder.
Sealing and the roof
An air conditioner cooling a room that leaks into a hot corridor never reaches cut-out. Seal the gap around the refrigerant pipe entry, fit a draught strip under the door, and close the room.
West-facing rooms and uninsulated concrete roof slabs are the two largest loads on any air conditioner in Pakistan. A reflective roof treatment changes the duty cycle measurably and permanently, and shading a west wall costs almost nothing.
Servicing is not optional maintenance
A clogged indoor filter forces longer run times for the same room temperature. A dust-packed outdoor coil raises condensing pressure, which directly raises the compressor's power draw for identical cooling.
Clean the filter monthly through the season and have the outdoor unit cleaned before it starts. It is one of the few maintenance tasks with an immediately measurable return.
What to actually do
- Set 26 °C and leave it there. Resist dropping it on arrival — the room cools at the same rate regardless of the setpoint.
- Run a ceiling fan in the same room.
- Clean the indoor filter monthly and the outdoor coil annually.
- Seal the pipe entry gap and fit a draught strip under the door.
- Use the timer to stop it a couple of hours before you wake, rather than running until the alarm.
- Shade or reflectively treat west-facing walls and the roof slab.
What does not work
- “Setting 16 °C cools the room faster.”
- It does not. The compressor runs at one output; the setpoint only determines when it stops. A low setting simply means it never does.
- “Leaving the AC on all day is cheaper than switching it on when you get home.”
- False for a building of ordinary thermal mass. The cool-down pull is real but far smaller than several hours of maintenance cycling.
Frequently asked questions
Does an inverter AC make the thermostat setting less important?
No — it makes it differently important. An inverter unit modulates to match the room's heat gain, and a lower setpoint means it holds a higher speed continuously. The percentage penalty per degree is similar.
Is it worth pre-cooling before peak hours on a TOU tariff?
In a reasonably insulated room, yes. Cooling harder before the window opens and raising the setpoint during it shifts part of the energy into the cheaper period. In a poorly insulated concrete house the stored coolth disappears within the hour.
