Refrigerator: units per month in Pakistan
Short answer. A refrigerator runs continuously but its compressor does not. A modern medium fridge drawing about 160 watts with the compressor on for roughly 13 hours of a summer day uses about 2 units daily and 62 units a month. In winter the same fridge falls to nearer 38 units. An old unit with tired seals can double both figures.

Compressor running power. The nameplate figure is often the starting surge, not the running draw, which is why nameplate arithmetic overstates fridge consumption badly.
Units and cost by usage pattern
Each row is 160 W × the hours shown ÷ 1,000, over 30 days. The three cost columns exist because the rupee cost of a unit depends entirely on which slab your month lands in — the same consumption costs a light user and a heavy summer household very different amounts. Rates are illustrative and not a substitute for the tariff table printed on your own bill.

Rate bands: Rs 12.5 — light user, protected (≈150 units/month); Rs 27.5 — average household (≈250 units/month); Rs 36 — heavy summer month (700+ units). This appliance is seasonal — the usage patterns above assume 6 months of the year at most, so the annual figure is lower than twelve times the monthly one.
Duty cycle, not wattage
Everyone quotes the wattage and almost nobody quotes the duty cycle, which is where the real number lives. The compressor runs only until the cabinet reaches setpoint, then stops.
That fraction is driven by ambient temperature, door openings, how full the fridge is, and the condition of the door gasket. It is why the same fridge costs 60 per cent more to run in Multan in June than in Murree in January.
The old fridge problem
A refrigerator is one of very few appliances that runs every hour of every day for its entire life, which makes efficiency differences compound enormously. A twenty-year-old unit with degraded insulation and a worn gasket can use two to three times what a current model uses for the same cooling.
Over a year that difference can approach 500 units. It is one of the few cases where replacing a working appliance is defensible purely on running cost.
Checking your own gasket in thirty seconds
Close the door on a currency note so half of it is inside. If it slides out with no resistance, the seal at that point is failing. Test at several points around the door.
A gasket is replaceable and cheap, and on an otherwise sound fridge it is the highest-return repair available.
How to use less
- Keep it out of direct sun and at least six inches clear of the wall so the condenser coils can shed heat.
- Clean the coils at the back twice a year — dust on them is the most common cause of a fridge that runs constantly.
- Let hot food cool before it goes in; a covered pot of hot curry can add an hour of compressor time.
- Keep it reasonably full. Thermal mass holds temperature through door openings, and a nearly empty fridge cycles more.
- Set the thermostat to a middle position rather than maximum. Colder than needed is pure cost.

Should I switch the fridge off during load shedding?
It switches itself off — there is no supply. What matters is not opening the door during the outage; a closed fridge holds temperature for hours, while an opened one has to recover the whole load when power returns.
How much does a deep freezer add on top?
A separate deep freezer typically adds another 50 to 90 units a month in a Pakistani summer, because it maintains a far larger temperature difference against the room.
Is an inverter refrigerator worth it?
The variable-speed compressor holds temperature more steadily and avoids the restart surges, and the saving is real over a device that runs continuously for a decade. It also behaves much better on an unstable supply.
