Checking your meter's accuracy at home
Short answer. Switch everything off, confirm the meter has stopped, then run a single known load — a 2,000 watt geyser or heater — for exactly one hour and see how much the register advances. It should read close to 2 units. A result more than a few per cent high is worth taking to a formal test; a result that is close means the problem is your installation, not the meter.

The test, step by step
Switch off every circuit at the distribution board. Watch the meter for two minutes — the disc should stop or the digital pulse indicator should go dark. Any continued movement means current is flowing outside your control, and you have found the answer before starting.
Now switch on one circuit feeding a single known resistive load. A geyser element or a room heater is ideal because its rating is fixed and it draws its full power continuously. Avoid motors and anything with a thermostat that cycles.
Note the meter reading, run for exactly one hour, and note it again. A 2,000 watt load should advance the register by very close to 2 units.
Interpreting the result honestly
Meters have a permitted error band. A result within a few per cent of the expected figure is a meter behaving normally, not a meter that is slightly cheating you.
A result 15 or 20 per cent high is a genuine indication and worth the formal test fee. A result that is low means the meter is under-recording, which is not in your favour to pursue but is worth reporting to avoid a future assessment.
Remember the appliance rating is nominal. A geyser marked 2,000 W may draw 1,900 or 2,100, so the test detects large errors reliably and small ones not at all.
The more likely finding
In most households that run this test, the meter proves accurate and the residual movement with everything off proves not to be zero.
That residual is the real discovery: earth leakage through damp wiring, a failing immersion element, a circuit wired upstream of the distribution board, or a connection somebody else is using. Each is worth finding and none is the meter's fault.
Before you apply for a formal test
- Confirm the meter stops when all circuits are off
- Run the known-load test and record both readings and the exact time
- Photograph the meter at the start and end
- Compare your twelve-month consumption history for an unexplained step change
- Rule out a change in household load — a new appliance, a longer-running pump
