Reading an old electromechanical meter
Short answer. Read the digits left to right and ignore the final one if it sits on a red drum or behind a red bezel — that digit is tenths of a unit and is not billed. The spinning disc is a live indicator of current draw, which makes an old meter more useful than a digital one for finding an unexplained load.

The red digit
Almost every disc-type meter marks its last register digit in red, or separates it behind a coloured window. That digit counts tenths of a kilowatt-hour and is excluded from the billed reading.
Including it multiplies your reading by ten, which produces a figure so far from the bill that people conclude the meter is faulty. It is the most frequent misreading of this meter type by a wide margin.
Using the disc as a diagnostic
The disc turns in proportion to power draw, which makes it a real-time load indicator that no digital meter matches for immediacy.
Switch off every breaker in the house and watch it. A disc that keeps turning means current is flowing somewhere downstream of the meter — earth leakage in the wiring, a circuit that bypasses your distribution board, or an unauthorised connection. All three are worth finding.
You can also quantify a load. The meter's nameplate gives revolutions per kilowatt-hour, often 600 or 1,200. Time how long the disc takes for ten revolutions with one appliance running, and the arithmetic gives you that appliance's actual draw.
Why old meters usually read low
Mechanical meters wear. Bearings age, the braking magnet weakens, and the general direction of drift is towards under-recording rather than over-recording.
This matters when a meter is replaced: the new meter frequently reads higher for identical consumption, and the household concludes the new one is wrong. Usually the old one was.
It also matters because a meter found substantially slow can trigger an assessment for the under-recorded period, which is why reporting a suspected fault in writing early is worth doing.
A thirty-second leakage test
- Switch off every circuit at the distribution board, leaving only the main on
- Watch the disc for two full minutes
- Any movement at all means current is flowing that you are not controlling
- Switch circuits back on one at a time to isolate which one
Frequently asked questions
The disc turns slowly even with everything switched off. Is the meter faulty?
More often it is your installation. Earth leakage through damp wiring, a failing water heater element, or a circuit connected upstream of the distribution board all produce exactly this. Isolate circuit by circuit before assuming the meter is at fault.
Should I ask for my old meter to be replaced?
If it is under-recording you may prefer not to, but a meter found defective at inspection can bring an assessment for past periods with it. Replacement removes that exposure and generally comes with more accurate billing.
