Reading a digital electricity meter, screen by screen
Short answer. The billed figure is the cumulative kWh total, displayed on the screen usually labelled kWh or with the OBIS code 1.8.0. The meter cycles automatically through several other screens — voltage, current, demand, tamper counters and date — and reading any of those instead is the most common cause of a figure that does not match the bill.

Finding the right screen
Most single-phase electronic meters sold to Pakistani distribution companies scroll automatically through their display set every few seconds. Watch a full cycle before reading anything; it takes under a minute and it tells you what the meter offers.
The screen you want shows a large number with kWh beside it, or is preceded by the code 1.8.0. On meters with time-of-use registers you will also see 1.8.1 and 1.8.2 — peak and off-peak accumulators — whose sum equals the total.
Read left to right and stop at the decimal point. Digits after it are fractions of a unit and are not billed.
What the other screens are telling you
Voltage, usually shown as a figure near 220. Persistent readings well below 200 or above 250 are a genuine supply complaint, and having the meter's own figure makes that complaint concrete.
Current in amperes, which is what the connection is drawing at that instant. Switch everything off and this should fall close to zero — if it does not, something is drawing power that you have not accounted for.
Maximum demand, on meters that record it, and a tamper or event counter that logs cover openings, magnetic interference and reverse current.
Checking the bill against the meter
The bill's present reading was taken on the reading date printed beside it. Today's meter figure should be higher, by roughly your daily average multiplied by the days since.
If today's figure is lower than the bill's present reading, the bill is wrong, because a meter register cannot decrease. That is an unambiguous fact and it is the strongest possible basis for a reading correction.
Reading it mid-cycle to avoid a slab jump
Note the reading on the same day each week. The difference is your weekly consumption, and multiplying by the weeks remaining tells you where the cycle will finish.
For a household near the 200-unit protected threshold, this single habit is worth more than any efficiency measure, because it tells you which week to act in.
Recording a reading properly
- Photograph the display showing the kWh screen, with the meter's number plate in frame
- Include something that establishes the date — a phone screen or a newspaper
- Note the reading date printed on your latest bill for comparison
- Keep the photograph until the next bill confirms the figure
Frequently asked questions
My meter shows several numbers. Which one is on the bill?
The cumulative kWh total, on the screen marked kWh or coded 1.8.0. On a time-of-use meter it is the sum of the peak and off-peak registers, and the bill will show both separately.
Can I press a button to see the reading rather than waiting for the cycle?
Many meters have a scroll button on the front that advances the display manually. It only changes what is shown; it cannot alter any register, and using it is not tampering.
The display is blank. Is the meter dead?
Not necessarily — some meters blank the display to save power and wake on a button press or on load. If it stays blank with load present, report it in writing the same day.
