Short answer. An office desktop with a monitor averages around 150 watts in use, so an eight-hour day is 1.2 units and about 36 units a month. A gaming machine at 400 watts for four hours a day is 1.6 units daily and 48 units a month, and leaving any desktop running around the clock roughly triples its contribution.

The 650 W power supply myth
A power supply's rating is the maximum it can deliver, not what the machine draws. A desktop with a 650 W unit browsing the web is pulling perhaps 70 watts.
Estimating a PC's consumption from its PSU label overstates it by a factor of five or more, and it is one of the most common errors in home energy audits.
Idle time is where it goes
A machine left on overnight and at weekends spends most of its life idling at 60 to 80 watts producing nothing. Over a month that idle time frequently exceeds the working consumption.
Sleep mode drops it to a few watts and resumes in seconds. Enabling it is the whole intervention.
Monitors
A 22 inch LED monitor is 20 to 25 watts, and a large or high-refresh panel considerably more. Two or three monitors on one machine can equal the computer itself.
Monitor sleep after ten minutes is free and immediate.
How to use less
- Enable sleep after fifteen minutes and monitor sleep after ten. This is worth more than any hardware change.
- Shut down overnight rather than leaving the machine idling.
- Use a switched power strip for the peripherals — printer, speakers, external drives — that are on only occasionally.
- For light workloads, a laptop uses a fraction of a desktop's energy for the same task.
