Washing machine: units per month in Pakistan
Short answer. A twin-tub machine washing in cold water uses roughly 0.5 units per load and around 9 units a month at four loads a week. A fully automatic machine on a hot programme can use 1.5 to 2 units per load — three to four times as much — and virtually all of the difference is the water heater, not the drum.

The motor alone is 350–500 W. A fully automatic machine on a hot programme adds a heating element of 1,800–2,000 W, and that dominates the cycle.

The three cost columns exist because the rupee cost of a unit depends entirely on which slab your month lands in — the same consumption costs a light user and a heavy summer household very different amounts. The heater is the bill
Tumbling clothes in water takes a few hundred watts. Raising forty litres of water to 60 °C takes a two-kilowatt element running for a substantial part of the cycle.
That is why the same machine can use 0.4 units on a cold wash and 2 units on a hot one. Selecting a cold or 30 °C programme is the single biggest lever available on laundry consumption.
Twin-tub versus fully automatic in Pakistani conditions
Twin-tub machines remain common here and they use markedly less electricity, because they generally wash in whatever water you put in and have no heater at all. They use more water and more of your attention.
Fully automatic machines are more convenient and, on a cold programme with a full load, are not dramatically worse. The gap opens up entirely through heated programmes.
Spin speed and the drying that follows
A faster spin uses slightly more electricity and removes considerably more water. In a household that line-dries, that is a pure gain in drying time.
In a household with an electric dryer, a high spin speed is worth far more than it costs, because dryer energy is many times spin energy.
How to use less
- Wash cold or at 30 °C unless there is a reason not to. Modern detergents are formulated for it.
- Run full loads. A half load uses nearly the same water and heat as a full one.
- Use the highest spin speed your fabrics allow, particularly if anything goes into a dryer afterwards.
- Clean the inlet filter — a restricted fill lengthens the whole cycle.

How many units does one wash use?
Roughly 0.4 to 0.6 units on a cold programme and 1.5 to 2 units on a hot one, for a standard domestic load. The variation is almost entirely water temperature.
Does a washing machine use more electricity or more water?
In cost terms in most Pakistani homes, electricity — particularly on heated programmes. But if the water is pumped from a bore, that pumping is electricity too and belongs in the same calculation.
